On New Year's Eve, inside a police station that's about to be closed for good, officer Jake Roenick must cobble together a force made up cops and criminals to save themselves from a mob looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop.
It is New Years Eve and the police station for Precinct 13 has had its final year of operationit is due to be mothballed and officer Jake Roenick is in charge of securing it and turning off all the lights. However bad weather forces a transport of prisoners to seek shelter in the station and Roenick opens up the cells to hold them temporarily. However, among the prisoners is one Marion Bishop who, aside from having a girls' name is also a big time mobster. Sadly for everyone in the station, Bishop can identify and name a whole bus load of corrupt cops – cops who will do whatever it takes to stop him from taking down their operations; in this case "whatever it takes" will mean killing Bishop and everyone else in the station.<br/><br/>Having already seen John Carpenter's remake of Precinct 13 (otherwise knownGhosts of Mars) and I didn't think this remake could be worse than that even if I didn't see the point of remaking the original. After a bit too much of a build up the film gets going and when it does it does a good job of keeping it up until the end. The basic plot is, of course, notconvincingthe original mainly thanks to the addition of the dirty cops with a world-conquering arsenal at their disposal who cannot get into an old building held off by a handful of guys. Regardless of this the action is enjoyable and I did really get into it for the majority, thanks in part to just how tough it is. As with the original, the group is picked off one by one but it still surprised me just how violent and brutal it was – it was effective in getting me involved and for having an impact in a way that the body count in a slasher movie does not.<br/><br/>The cast is nicely put together so that you're not sure who will and won't make it. Hawke is well cast and his opening scene shows he can act even if the rest of the film is more about himan action hero. Fishburne is not that good and here he just cannot shake the shadow of Morpheous and comes acrossrather gruff but lacking interest. Bryne just takes the money and goes through the motions in an uninspiring way but his crew are all very impressive and do the whole "running with guns in SWAT outfits" really well. The people in the station are mixed – Coates, Bello, Craven and Leguizamo are all good, Brian Dennehy was a surprise find in a cinema but I was annoyed by yet more African-American clichés from Ja Rule and the female gangbanger (forget her name).<br/><br/>Overall this is an enjoyable film that will not replace the original but provides an effective thriller nonetheless. The direction makes good use of the blizzard to produce tension that it keeps up for the majority of the film thanks to some gritty and surprisingly brutal action. The cast dorequired and, although it is nothing fantastic it is still work a look for some solid thrills.
I saw this Assault on Precinct 13 and it was the greatest remake that i've seen in a long time. So entertaining! It takes place in Detroit old precinct where a prison bus gets caught in the snow. Lawrence Fishburne is a mobster that the cops have been waiting to catch and he finally gets caught and is on this very bus. Lawrence Fishburne is the man. He was great in it! He was the tough, bad guy, but very smooth and cool. The film was a great thriller from start to finish. I think it was better than the original Carpenter flick. The chemistry between the actors, particularly Fishburne and Hawke was great. I don't want to give anything away but i will say this, definitely go out and see this movie this weekend.
In an era when similar genre pics increasingly resemble videogames, musicvideos or glossy commercials, the blunt, brawny simplicity of helmer Jean-Francois Richet's storytelling style seems positively novel.
